  1. Using a VIDEO_TS folder as the source, I created an MP4 file (using the High Quality preset) in Handbrake for editing (cutting only) in Pinnacle 18.

When I imported and dropped the MP4 into my Pinnacle timeline, playback on Pinnacle's preview window had the audio and video out of sync by 6-7 seconds.

I then made another attempt at the MP4 conversion process selecting constant frame rate instead of variable frame rate and that seemed to reduce the sync gap - but not completely, it is still off by 2-3 seconds.

Any idea why I am seeing this delay in Pinnacle? When I played the first MP4 file back with VLC it played just fine. The problem is with the codec Pinnacle uses when rendering, right?

    And suggestions to correct this?

  2. Simple extract mpeg2 file from VIDEO_TS folder with Vob2mpg
then import MPG file to Pinnacle
    no encoding needed

Can't you import the video_ts folder in pinnacle? Or try vob2mpg on the video_ts folder and try import the mpg.

  4. Thanks! I will try vob2mpg later today. Didn't know that could be done. Pinnacle won't import VOBs inside a VIDEO_TS folder. I already tried that.
I will post a followup with my results.

  5. Same result with VOB2MPG. I used IFO mode when performing the extraction in the app. Any other ideas?

    Options:
    1. Find out if Pinnacle can import MPEG files that contain more than one audio stream.
    2. Find out if Pinnacle can import MPEG files that contain AC3 audio.
    3. Find out if Pinnacle can import MPEG files that contain multi-channel (5.1) audio.
    4. Stop using Pinnacle - get your money back.
Even Pinnacle 14 lists MPEG2 as "importable". Can't find any concrete info on what can be imported into 18. Contact customer support with your receipt and demand help.

  7. Pinnacle 18 works for everything I do except this one thing.

    Any other suggestions?

Is there a free mpeg editor available that does simple cut transitions?

    VobBlanker, MPEG2Cut2

  9. Neither of those tools worked for me. All I want to do is cut out a few inappropriate scenes from a home video that was burned onto a DVD.

Then you didn't use them correctly. I'm more familiar with VobBlanker than with MPEG2Cut2, but both can do the job, although MPEG2Cut2 will give you back an MPG which will have to be reauthored while VobBlanker will give you back the edited DVD ready to reburn. Saying "Neither of those tools worked for me." does nothing to help anyone figure out what you did wrong so ... good luck.

Neither of these apps has a timeline view (as far as I can tell). What I want to do is drop the .mpg video clip into a time line, cut out certain sections (maybe 1 minutes worth out of 90 minutes) and produce an output file (that will be slightly smaller than the source file) with very little or no loss of quality.

My only other work around, which seemed to work last night (but not 100% perfectly) was to convert the .mpg file produced my VOB2MPG by feeding it into AutoGK to create an Xvid AVI. Once I did that I used MPC Home Cinema Player to determine what the audio delay was (800ms). Using VirtualDubMod I offset the audio by 800ms and produced an AVI file where the audio was in perfect sync. Using that AVI file I imported it into Pinnacle, did my cut edits, and output an H264 MP4 file that played rather well on my TVs except for the fact that the audio was still off by the tiniest tiniest bit (enough for me to notice).

VobBlanker does have a slider when you're in the Prev/Cut window that tells what point you're at for that particular cell (chapter) by time as well as providing a frame picture. You do have to find the particular cells (chapters) you want to cut. That's easy enough to do. One way is to play the DVD with some player that tells you the chapter (which isn't always the same as the cell number). You can also play the cell, or advance by GOPs (roughly by half-second intervals). But neither program is an NLE. You find where the cuts are to be made, mark the in and out points of the part(s) you want to cut, making sure to tick the 'Cut' 'Action between marks' and then go on from there choosing other sections to remove. When all done you set an 'Output Folder' and save your work. In principle it's pretty easy and the guide to which I linked makes it seem harder than it really is, although it wanted to cover all the bases.

MPEG2Cut only allows you to save parts you want to keep (as opposed to removing parts you don't want) but it also allows you to join together all those saved parts.
