I downloaded the latest ffdshow & selected the VFW Config option & set all codecs (including all the WMV options) to libavcodec, I hit apply & o.k.
That still won't let Virtual Dub open any .asf files for me.
Do I need to configure something in VirtualDub for it to recognize the settings changed in ffdshow or do I need to do something else?

You need the Windows Media plugin http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler/Plugins/WMV/
Under ffdshow vfw configuration, set WMV1,2 and 3 to WMV9 and VC-1 to libavcodec
for wma you'll need either DivX 3.11 or DivX WMA Audio codec.
Virtualdub does not support WMA pro audio.
