  1. just wanted to check which apps can do it in case i wanna do it in the future. say i want to convert back to mkv or some other video format.

can't think of a reason i would want to, but all this conversion business can be pretty time consuming. and plus these videos taking up a lot of space on my hd.

is Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate enough?

Everything I've seen indicates that wondershare is just another piece of crap that some arsehole so called developer ... and all these guys do is write a shite GUI for existing eopen source apps ... figured he could charge for. There are many free tools that are much better.

There are lots of very good free converters you can use that are often recommended here. But they tend to be complex and really made for knowledgeable video geeks. They're just not noob friendly at all.

There are also a bunch of easier to use ones, but I know of none that do a good job. Every one I've seen is crap.

The only ones I know that have decent power and ease of use are handbrake and vidcoder, which are the same encoder with different GUIs.

However, encoding video with good quality is complicated. And since there are no "plug in" settings that work for any video, you can't really simplify it. Many noobs just don't want to hear this but that's their problem.

Go for it, read the handbrake docs (which are very good), but once you find out just how complex proper encoding is you may feel that buying more HD space is looking better and better.

I go along with Hoser Rob. Wondershare should change their name to WonderWreck.

Your proposal is based on the common myth that all videos and all video encoding are basically the same thing, kinda like WinZIP or RAR. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Anyway, "mkv" isn't a "format", it's a container that can contain many encoded formats. The idea that one can get a smaller file by re-encoding in some other way without damage is another popular myth. There are ways to re-wrap vob into an mkv container without re-encoding -- but it's a dumb way to do it, it won't save space, and it renders the videos unplayable with many devices.
