I've noticed that VCD made with DVDx + TMPEGenc combo are slightly shifted to the left when watched on a 16:9 screen. Nothing like this happens with VCDs made with DVDx alone or DVDx + Panasonic plugin combo. To make it even more complicated the same movies look OK when played on a different standalone DVD player. Or let's put it this way: stuff made with DVDx alone or DVDx + Panasonic always look OK on all standalone systems I've ever tried them while DVDx + TMPEGenc combo stuff looks good on some but is shifted to the left on the others.
Any ideas what might be the reason for this?

are you sure you used the same resolutions and mpeg type when comparing them? different resolutions and mpeg types are treated differently by different players.
e.g. in 720x480 mpeg2 some players chop the left side of the screen and nothing from the right, but others chop a little bit from the left and a little bit from the right. but most players won't cut anything from 352x240 mpeg1.
