I thought MakeMKV was free. It's telling me mine has expired and I need to register and when I try to it closes itself down.

The key should still be valid for the next day or so. Sometimes Mike is slow to post the new keys so you may have to live without MakeMKV for a few days after that.

I've been around for years here. I'm hardly a newbie, yet I sort of made the same post last year as yours. Here's the deal. It is technically free, but the program doesn't explain to you that the trick is that you have to keep re-installing the free version every time the previous version expires on you. So as long as you keep re-installing the demo version, it stays free. You can reach your own conclusion, as I have done, about the whole process and the fact that MakeMKV itself does not make this clear and sort of (cough cough) encourages you to come to the conclusion that you're going to have to buy a copy to keep using it when that's not really the case. I don't want to get into a big debate about it as I don't really have a bad opinion of it, but I will simply say that it did not meet a very specific need I had at the time. I gave it one more try and found it had expired, yet many of our members here suggest using it all the time because it's "Free forever", hence my post questioning that and the explanation of how it really works. I don't use it at all, but now you know what you have to do to keep using it for free forever.

Every single time I recommend MakeMKV, I include an explanation that you have to update the beta key every month or so, or install new versions as they are released. It ain't rocket science folks.

Fair enough. But this presupposes that EVERYBODY has read such posts before from you, if you want to play that card. And you admit that YOU, not the author of the program itself, are doing this to let people know, which confirms my point that the software itself is deficient in that it pretends that you need to buy it to keep using it.

I'm not anti-MakeMKV so if people want to use it, that's fine. But since when is it YOUR job to make sure that people understand how to update it for free?

OK, I'll have to correct you here. MakeMKV DOES NOT pretend that it is free. It's quite clear on the subject that IT IS FREE WHILE IN BETA. Which basically means Mike is quite willing to let people use the program for free for the time being but reserves the right to withdraw that offer at any time, which is why you have to keep updating the key to keep the program running. The VideoHelp website and many other people/sites list the program as free and to some extent, for the time being, that is true, but I dare you to search through the entire MakeMKV website (the only valid source of MakeMKV information) and find a single mention that the program itself is entirely 100% free. Don't blame the program or it's developers for how other people choose to describe it.

That's okay if he's a few days late. I'm very grateful to him for posting it anyway. Thanks for letting me know.
