lve asked about this problem before, however recently l became aware of a possible reason for the issue.
you see basically this issue tends to only affect MKV files, not all mind you but specific ones up till a few days back l had no clue and thought it could be problem files however the problem was always completely random in the respects that while it affected certain files, ld always find new ones it would experience the few second hang on and it only happens once per boot.
the conclusion l was given that sounds the most reasonable is it relates to the fonts cache, my guess given the new information is that the reason for the hang only once per boot relates to the fact that my player is caching fonts (as most of the files l watch are subtitled).
suffice to say it makes allot of sense, even more so considering it only happens once per boot and lm wondering if there is a setting in MPC or something l could do to cache the fonts in a way that l dont get system hangs.

actually l was using the MPC-HC edition, tho l do admit it is a little outdated. just downloaded and installed the latest version.
l doubt its fixed the issue, l did check but my system has been on for 24hrs so the fonts may have cached so l wont know until next reboot if its helped but it would make sense that being the issue considering it only happens once per boot but the common denominator is that every file that has the issue does have subtitles. -
Do you use Haali Media Splitter, then? And an outdated version of it as well?
As for the font cache, what stops you from deleting it manually ---
--- and reboot your machine soon afterwards -
hmm, well l use the CCCP codec pack which is a few years old so its likely outdated.
however lve just installed a newer version of FFDshow (latest version l believe from their site) and Haali (1.13.138.14) over the top of the original versions tho l havent touched the LAV filters. l did try a file l knew caused issues before my system rebuild a couple of weeks back, l had not tried it recently l just noticed the issue l more recent files. l guess l wont know if l have fixed the issue unless l run into it again. -
well, didnt take long.. getting system hangs on first mkv file l open, seems to only happen with subtitled files my guess still lays with font caching.

You could try MPC-BE. Very similar to MPC-HC, but perhaps a little more forgiving.
Some of my captures have multiple cuts/joins. (Adverts removed quick and dirty with tsSniper.) MPC-BE plays 'em, MPC-HC sometimes hangs at the cut. Now, whether MPC-BE will be more forgiving with subtitles, I dunno. But there you are.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.Pull! Bang! Darn!
