  1. Just EXACTLY how much can you fit on a CD? I used the bitrate calculator for 2 74 min. CD and encoded a movie..it came to 1.4 gigs.. so I split them them in half and each file is about 739mb... So is it possible for the file to fit on a CD? Or does the file size have to be at a max. 700mb and lower???
    Thanks

i'll just have to assume you're making a vcd. i think that the way it works, is for an 80 min cd, you have 80 minutes, OR 800 megs of vcd. so with a 74, it would be 740 mb's. your files fit just under that. burn it, i'm sure it will fit.

  3. Ok thanks. Well by looking at a CD is says the max amount it holds on a 74min. is 650MB and 80min. 700MB. So how would it fit on to a CD? And yes it's a VCD

  4. I know it has been explained elsewhere in these forums but VCD/SVCD format disks can store more data that when written to just as an ISO data CD. I believe it is because there is less error handling data saved on the disk. This means that
    1. 74 minute = about 740Mb
    2. 80 minute = 800 Mb (see the pattern)
There is slight variation allowing for overburning etc. Also note that 74 minute CDs actually do hold 74 minutes worth of VCD watching.

  5. The post above is correct.

VCD's are written in what's called MODE-2. Not MODE-1 like standard data CD's. Basically MODE-2 has less CRC ( Cyclic Redundancy Check ) than mode, so you get extra space in MODE-2.

So the numbers are correct. A 80 Minute CD-R will hold 800MB and a 74 minute CD-R will hold 740MB. And the new 90 minute CD-R's 900MB, etc.

    Vince604,

...and it's worth to mention, that EZCD5 will handle everything as MODE-2 (data cd) and therefor not make full use of the VCD format. If your movie is between ~60-74min., then most likely EZCD5 will give you an error message; because it looks at the filesize, rather than the movie lenght.

  7. Just want to thank you three guys. I now understand how the space on a CD works. Well I'm using Nero and looked at the guide for burning an XVCD. OPPS I MADE A MISTAKE. IT'S AN XVCD THAT I'VE CREATED NOT A VCD. But I don't think it really makes a big different. But thanks again!

I think that the Maximum MPEG file size for burning cds is:

    74 min. = 734mb
    80 min. = 791mb

And the Maximum CD size (in the Main Page of VCD Easy) should be:

    74 min. = 755mb
    80 min. = 807mb

but surly if you had a really big file you would just do the over burn on to the disk? i know that its a little risky doing this becuase you can damage your writer but i have been doing this overburn with nero 5.0+ and i have never done anything to my writer so its worth a look in to!
