best format to download videos in.

i downloaded a video in mp4? but it was a bit blurry on the television.
if the video was NOT posted that way... which is the best format to use when i download it.
one format just had the file name with no extension when i downloaded it!

That's because:
1) The download can only be as good as what was uploaded. Many of these downloading programs offer quality options that are unobtainable because the original upload may have been a crappy WMV or FLV file to begin with.
2) The video you are watching on YouTube is the size of a postage stamp compared to the size of your television. Depending on how long ago it was uploaded and WHAT was uploaded....you may never get good quality.
3) Changing (downloading) programs will not help either.

You download it in the highest resolution available, making sure your download program doesn't reencode it at the same time.

I'd say most of us do know that already. Maybe everyone but you knows that already. The 1080p one. Or in words you might understand better, get the one with the highest number.

Perhaps drag and drop onto mpc-hc or similar.

Windows doesn't play media files. Media players do. Depending on which version of Windows you have, Windows Media Player may not support MP4 file unless you have an MP4 reader/splitter and the appropriate codecs installed.
