What software these days is still capable of doing half-D1 size DVDs?

I have to do a half-D1 disc with 4hrs of video on it.
I'm obliged to use half-D1 352x240 to do this.

At the moment I have tried SVCD2DVD for this but the movement is not good quality. On scenes where there is not much movement the quality is good but as soon as there's movement the quality is unacceptable.

I tried Ulead (now Correl) DVD wqorkshop and that no longer does half-d1.

What software out there would help me do a good half-d1?

Half-D1 is not 352x240 nor 352x288, it's 352x480 or 352x576

Secondly, you can encode to MPEG-2 with HCenc (freeware and very-good).

Third, the authoring can be done with Muxman, DVDauthor, DVD-lab Pro, etc.

Half D1 is 352x480. 352x240 isn't considered half D1. It is VCD or perhaps "quarter D1". ...and you have listed the NTSC version of it.

True half D1 352x480 (NTSC) or 352x576 (PAL) should be OK for four hours of video on one standard single-layer DVD. I haven't used it for half D1 but AVStoDVD might be worth trying for this. It uses HCEnc by default for re-encoding.

I do not understand why you say that Ulead DVD Workshop does not do half-D1 (as in, as said, 352*576) as I have made a dvd with this program and at that resolution. Mind you I did encode the video outside the program.

If you really must have 4 hours on one single-layer disk you are talking of 2,000 kbps and that is borderline for half-D1. For that bit-rate you are probably better off at your quoted VCD resolution but, again, encode first and then import in to the authoring program.

I know its not the topic and I'm sure the poster knows this but I thought I'd mention it anway -

You are much better off using a dual layer disc (edit - and use full d1) for this than doing it the way you are proposing.

Either that or split the video to fit two single layer discs.

It will be much better quality wise going this route.

I'm sure you probably have your reasons for wanting to do this (what you are proposing). However I thought i'd at least offer the obvious alternative approach.

Or if you need to cram a ton onto one disc and you have a device that can play it back consider something as simple as standard def divx.

Standard def divx in an avi file should be really easy to play on a dvd as a data file on just about any device that plays off of a disc. H264 in a mp4 file would be more preferable but if you are looking for the lowest common denominator than sd divx would be that approach.

But if you must use half d1 for a dvd use the above suggestions (from the other forum members).
