I am getting a "cannot open video part of the file" when trying to import an .avi file into TMPG DVD Author Works 5..

The full file type is listed as pdtv.xvid-w4f.avi.

I am using Windows XP SP3 so the post I found dealing with Windows 7 woudlnt work. Is there somethign I can do or something I can install (codec or something) to get this to work and be able to import the file in and then to DVD?

The Video plays well in VLC and doesnt seem to have any issues.. I have also changed the file to .xivd and then .divx and thought it still played fine in VLC, same error in TMPG

I have 11 files like this that I want to burn.

    Thanks,

  2. Try installing xvid , then importing them again
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/XviD-Codec

If that still doesn't work, use mediainfo view=>text for more information on the files

Playing in VLC is irrelevant since it uses it's own built-in codecs; thus as test to see whether there is a system wide
    compatibility, it's useless.

Try playing the file in Windows media Player and see if that works.

XVID Codec worked...thanks so much......I tend to forget that .avi isnt a format!

Any other codecs I should install while I am at it that I may run into?

I'm not a fan of the "shotgun" approach . No use cluttering up your system with 100's of things that you never use. My opinion: just install codecs if/when you need them . The program mentioned earlier, mediainfo, can reveal more info about the video and codecs used on various videos

media player classic home cinema will play the file.

TmpGenc DVD Works likely needs to be fed mpeg2 video.

Install Format Factory, drag the .avi file to the open program after install, select "all to MPG", set everything to your DVD standard 16:9, 4:3 - bitrate, audio and so on. Make certain you note the folder to create the .mpg file in - don't lose where it is.

You can open the file and author it.

  8. The more recent versions of TMPGenc DVD Authoring Works will accept quite a few different formats and transcode as necessary before authoring to DVD, AVCHD or Bluray - the 'DVD' part of the name is a bit misleading nowadays.
