Have you already tried to get in touch with www.tamos.com

    My wild guess is,

untested proprietary driver ++ software not-tested-under-Windows-8 == problem

Any chance you can access the BIOS? If so, change boot settings to CD drive and boot from Win8 (or other OS) install disc. Re-install, but leave out CommView.

    Try System Restore first.

I don't know what your search engine is returning, but all Google finds for me is CommView, a network monitor and analyzer that can be used as a packet sniffer.

  10. I'm talking abt commview wifi WWW.tamos.com

  11. At $600.00 US dollars for packaged version of Commview for WiFi they sure should help you. They have live chat, try that first.

Also your wireless card may not be supported. Did you check that first? I could not find if that software is OK to use on Win 8, maybe you can find that on their web site, I couldn't.

if you boot into bios is the hard drive listed? sounds more like a hard drive failure to me. or possibly the boot sector/mbr is damaged. get a linux distro and boot that to look at what it finds for a hard drive.

can you remove the drive an hook it up as an extra drive in another computer? if so i'd make sure the data on there is intact by using a right click/properties/tools error checking.

never tried this but they claim their free version bootable cd can fix mbr's.

  18. It does look a lot like a bad hard drive, but it's such a weird coincidence right after uninstalling a program that a damaged mbr seem more like it. If your laptop uses UEFI that might also explain it, that's such a messed up system anything can happen.

Did you make your recovery discs when you first got the laptop? You should have an option to do a boot repair on there. It may be hard to find a Win 8 disc short of buying a retail disc ($$$), I'm pretty sure you can use a Windows Blue disc to fix it (just don't install it!).

If it's still within the store's return policy period, just exchange it.

Add this: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ to your sofware toolbox. It allows you to load and run just about any Linux distro from a flash drive or SD card. Next, download Ultimate BooT CD (UBCD) and Hiren's Rescue Disk. Choose the Unlisted Linux distro to load UBCD.

If you don't have a back up of your data files from the laptop, I would look to see if they are intact first, and if possible back them up to a portable hard drive. There is a mini Windows XP on the Hiren's Rescue Disc that will let you do both things.

To fix the MBR you should use a Windows 8 installation disc and follow the instructions here http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-fix-windows-8-mbr-master-boot-record/

I didn't, but other people posting this thread seemed to think it was the probable cause for your boot issues.

I'm not sure what to do about the MBR without a Windows 8 boot disk. fixmbr can be run from the command prompt in Windowx XP's console but you can't use that either.

  26. With Windows 8 your laptop is most likely using UEFI (explains why XP wouldn't run) the hard drive could be using MBR or GPT, the question then is what tool to use to fix it. The Windows disc makes it easy, the repair menu has an option to fix boot issues.

Windows supports UEFI since Vista, if you can get a hold of a disc from any newer version, the repair option will work the same. You can check with your local computer shop for a copy, mine charges a couple bucks for a disc copy. Just tell them you need it to fix a laptop, you don't need to buy a license to use the disc for repair.

I don't know if HP did like ACER, their recovery menu has repair options; you get to it by hitting ALT-F10 when booting. From what I could find you hit F11 with HP. If they don't provide repair options you might have to do a full restore.

P.S. Whatever you do don't install Windows Blue. it's a preview version and will expire. Windows 8.1 will be available free from the Microsoft store before the end of October. However, it will be another gigabyte download. I think you will be able to order a disc for $15.

You can't access the recovery partition on your hard drive, or download a Windows 8 installation disc ISO image from Microsoft, or borrow an Windows 8 installation disk from someone to attempt a repair install? In that case, perhaps you could take the laptop to a repair shop and pay someone to fix it for you.
