  1. I have two copies of home video on VHS tapes that are probably 20 years old, perhaps a little more. They were quite degraded the last time I checked them a few years ago, though that was on a very low quality VCR.

I`m wondering if the forum members here can make a recommendation for a professional restoration service who might be able to restore the tape(s) and create a digital copy. They should also be able to use whatever is recovered to make a composite that has the best audio and video signals from each.

My preference is to find someone with plenty of experience doing this, and hopefully has testimonials or references.

Ok, go! (and thanks, in advance)

One of our long time members operates a pro service, as well as a very informative guide to video processing and a restoration forum. http://www.digitalfaq.com/ is where many forum members saw their first taste of how pros and advanced hobbyists do it. The services are in a dropdown menu near the top of the main page, along with several other guides.

sanlyn's recommendation is mine as well. The guy who runs the service knows his stuff and is obsessive about quality. I have not used him, but I would if I had the need.

You'll find a ton of VHS transfer services at a wide price range. Be careful; many of them charge $$ but don't do anything that you couldn't do with a high quality VCR and a DVD recorder.

  6. That's exactly the kind of lead I was hoping for. Thanks very much, sanlyn and jman98! I also wasn't able to find that in the first few pages of the all-knowing googles, so am glad to have your referral. I'll send him an e-mail.
