  1. I've been trying to edit a video for about a week now and completely failing.

I'm using a 7D and I am trying to transcode the videos to something that is more edit friendly because my laptop is 8 years old already and can't really handle too much stress. I tried transcoding using MPEG StreamClip with Avid DNxHD codec.

My problem is when I load the transcoded .mov files into Sony Vegas Pro 9, IT HAS NO VIDEO! It's just a blank screen with the audio. Please help me. I've been following every tutorial that I can find but still nothing.

    MPEG Streamclip Settings:
    Compression: AVID DNxHD
    Color Levels: 709
    Alpha: none
    Resolutions: 1080i/59.94 DNxHD 145 8-bit
    Quality: 100%
    Frame Size: 1920x1080(unscaled)
    Deselected Interlaced Scaling

I don't know if it's my laptop or the codec or how I installed the codec that is the problem. Please help!

You could also consider the HuffYUV or Lagarith lossless codecs. I seem to recall reading that Vegas supports at least Lagarith.

To encode to HuffYUV you could use Avidemux (all built in), or VirtualDub with the HuffYUV VFW codec. For Lagarith you could use VirtualDub with the Lagarith VFW codec.

Hope it works out for you,
    Francois

I can play it with QuickTime but it's laggy.

  6. An alternative is to use cineform, performance is better than dnxhd (smoother editing) . Search for "gopro cineform studio" , it's the free version

But it doesn't matter, it will be laggy in vegas even if there was a picture.

Bottom line: You won't be able to edit HD footage smoothly with an 8 year old laptop

Really the only option you have is to get newer hardware , or maybe a proxy workflow (edit in SD, replace the assets for final render). Use search if you want more info on "proxy workflow and vegas"

You must have avid dnxhd installed if you can see it on quicktime

"Newer laptop" is meaningless ; what are the specs? Many new laptops are not adequate for video editing, and most Lenovo's are "business" oriented, implying inadquate GPU

I would take your original MOV files and use cineform (performance is better than dnxhd on windows, except maybe in Avid software like media composer)
