Wanted to get a sense of what current VH users, who deal with uncompressed / Lossless / Visually Lossless codecs, which one they prefer and why? (Could be a poll, but I thought I'd ask personally)

    Do you mix & match?
What scenarios lead you to use one over the other?
Where do you most encounter bottlenecks?
Where have you had difficulties/irregularities in the past?

List of codecs that fit this category:
    Uncompressed
    Uncompressed RGB
    Uncompressed YUV 4:4:4
    Uncompressed YUV 4:2:2
    Uncompressed YUV 4:2:0

    Lossless
    Apple Animation
    HuffYUV
    Lagarith
    UTlossless codec
    ffv1 lossless

    Visually-lossless (but Lossy) DI
    Cineform
    DNxHD
    Jpeg2000
    AIC
    ProRes

Not really what I was thinking, but there might be a separate category of somewhat Lossy Intra-codecs:
    DVCPro100
    DVCPro50
    High br AVC-Intra
    High br MPEG2-Intra

Users who use standard lossy codecs: sorry about the exclusivity of this question. I know it does focus more on Pros, Semi-Pros & power-users. But doesn't everyone want to get to that point?!!

  2. I'll bite.

As mainly an Avid guy, I use mostly DNxHD. I find it has a slightly better image/bitrate ratio than cineform, but cineform is pretty handy as an intermediate on quick outputs (that will be immediately compressed to mp4.)

ProRes @ `10Mbs gave me good results on about 200 hours of VCDs that I needed to incorporate into a project. I wanted to maintain the original resolution but keep the bitrate down. No noticeable increase in any kind of noise, but had to acept the quicktime gamma shift. Conversion was done with ffmpeg. Edited directly with AMA keeping each file under 8 mins for responsiveness. Tried a lot of alternatives to get to this. (DV, animation, meridien 1:1 among others)

Apple animation used to be the go-to for After Effects exports and I still use it for any non-standard raster sizes or material that will need extensive repurposing. Mostly DNxHD out now.

I keep loading (and unloading) huffyuv and lagarith -- but never end up using them.

AIC -- well, these days I just try to smile and go find a mac.

You know as well as anyone this is a moving target and today's answers are just today's answers.
