I am using the latest version of TMPEnc & am trying to convert my .Avi files to Mpeg1 so I can burn them to a CD-R using Nero 5.5 but TMPEnc will not accept any of my .Avi's, it gives me some such error message like "Not Valid" or something but Nero will take them & convert but Nero sucks for .Avi conversion. Do I need an earlier version of TMPEnc? I have tried all my .Avi's with this current version & none work.
Do I need an older version of TMPEnc?

I think you'll need TMPGEnc 12a. I'm still new to VCD authoring and conversion but found one thing very early on ... and this assumes you didn't create the origin-file. I've found some AVI files are, in reality, ASF files with an AVI extension. And of course, ASF conversions were disabled in TMPGEnc after v12a. It could also be that someone had earlier tried to convert an ASF file to AVI ... but that the resulting file retained certain ASF characteristics that are recognized as ASF by current versions of the software. Bottom line? When all else fails, revert to v12a. I keep both the current version and v12a on my desktop. Just remember, if you don't have v12a already, to download _both_ the software _and_ the translation patch (to English or whatever). The first time I tried to use it (without the English patch), it crashed my system. But, once the patch was in place, everything was copasetic.

Right click on your AVI and select properties, see what codec was used and make sure you have it installed.
I use the new TMPGEnc and there is nothing it wont convert including asf/wmv (Hacked MS codec installed) also a hacked directX driver -
make sure the vfpai plug in direct show priority is set high enough
i am using 6. -
I am also very new at the VCD thing and also came across this same problem. What I have done thou is to run my avi files through VirtualDub and re-save them as avi files and then ran TMPG with no more problems.

Each new version of TMPGEnc seems to change the VFAPI settings back to the default (no idea why)
you don't need 12a for anything - thats a bad myth -- as long as you have a codec for it (meaning it will play in MS Media player) then it will open up in TMPGEnc
my version of TMPGEnc opens everything from MPEG-2 to WMV
just make sure your DirectShow filter is set to 0 (thats ZERO -- the highest priority is ZERO)
I'd just like to repeat this point until one day it's accepted as fact "you don't need 12a for ANYTHING" :-)your pal,

Stinky,
I'm sure you're correct ... that v12a is not "needed" to read the file. Being new to all this, I tend toward the simple (but possibly stupid) approach. Just today, I attempted to view a downloaded AVI with the recent TMPGEnc and got the 'error' message ... then loaded it up with v12a and it played great. I suppose the thing that worries me is that VDub has given me occasional messages like "the codec you're using is a bad hack and may crash your system" ... and VDub has never told me "the codec you're using is a hack but it's OK." Perhaps I worry too much (grin). But I've found that v12a seems to work when all else fails. Not that it's a necessity, it just works for me in my specific case.
Speaking of TMPGEnc, perhaps you (or someone else here) could answer a simple question. Sometimes when I join two MPG files with TMPGEnc, the point at which the joining takes place is accented by an audible 'beep'. Is there a simple way to eliminate this 'beep'? -

I couldn't figure out why TMPGenc wouldn't open my HuffyUV encoded AVI's to save my life, and that did it (well, raising it to priority 3 did it). I had tried this previously but was elevating the wrong item.
Also, your MMC tool is fantastic. Thanks!
