Multicolours in one sub ?

Hello dear forumers,

as long as I haven't buy my future Blu-Ray Writer, I reauthor DVDs, subpics being in sup format .
Then I try to modify colours with DVDsubEdit, and it works well.


But I would like to have two colours in a same caption, like this :




(This means "NO SMOKING" in french)


Do you know whether this is possible ? (I believe not)

(PS : I want to keep the best quality, so I do not compress video with VirtualDub.)

Yes, it's possible. And there are three colors there, white, black, and orange. DVDs allow 4 colors, with one being the background color. It's kind of time consuming, though, if you plan on doing this for a lot of subs, as you'll have to edit individually all the lines you plan on changing.

Below is a picture taken from a DVD I made for you with 2-color selectable subs (subs not burned in, video not reencoded). I made it originally with SubStation Alpha (which makes SSA subs). Then the sub file was opened in MaestroSBT to make SST subs for use in Muxman. Finally, the colors on the final DVD were fixed in PGCEdit.

Actually, in Scenarist as well as old DVDMaestro, there was a facility to do color changes WHILE the sub was in the middle of displaying. Never used it myself, but was supposed to specifically be helpful for Karaoke, etc.

Since even DVD subs can operate at up to 30fps, it ought to be possible for other systems (that don't have that additional facility) to still be able to create & utilize those subs and display varying colors.

BD, of course, has no such restriction, because its color palette is greatly improved.

Creating ssa subtitles is easy, working with Mestro too, but I failed with Muxman. And PGCedit is not yet at my range, it's too difficult for the moment.


Anyway, I've found a way, too :
in DVDsubEdit, CTRL-Shift-E = edit (with paint), then fill some letters with the colour used for the antialias, and don't use antialias for the others : replace the pixels with either the outline colour, either the font colour.It works !

Yes, with two main colors you no longer can have an anti-alias color. However, editing BMPs in DVDSubEdit is the long way around. It may be fine for just a few subs in a DVD, though.

One of the tricks to using MaestroSBT is to make 4-color BMPs, and not use the default settings for colors and picture type. Once you get the hang of it, it's quite simple. But, I agree it has a bit of a learning curve. Unless you get them just right Muxman will reject them. For fixing colors, PGCEdit or DVDSubEdit, it doesn't make any difference. PGCEdit is way faster, though. You don't have to do all that waiting.
