Hardcode subtitles - UTF8

Hi,

I've spent 5-6 hours today trying to embed the subtitles into a movie.
I've created the subtitles with Subtitles Workshop. It did not display all characters correctly(if this would be the only issue I would be happy).

I've started by editting the subtitles in a text editor in UTF-8 and then played it in VLC and it was perfect.
then I spent around 1,5 hours trying to make VLC convert/export the movie with the subtitles embedded but couldn't. I believe that it's not possible.

Then I've started searching over the internet, and found some clues about Handbrake being able to help. But Handbreak cannot embed the subtitles in the movie, it would only create a separate track for subtitles (the Forced Only box cannot be ticket for a srt subtitles, and srt is the only one that they accept).

The next one that I've tried is AVIAddXSub. this one worked but there is no UTF-8 support. Even if I selected the proper languge of the subtitles it does not seem to make a difference, and I get some strange signs instead of the right characters. Moreover it does not embed the subtitles in the video it just creates a new separate subtitles track.

I've also tried Freemake Video converter, from a bit strange website... and this one works, but does not display some UTF-8 characters correctly.

The last oen that I've tried is Avidemux. Apparently in v2.6 it has support only for ssa subtitles. I did convert the srt to ssa in Subtitles workshop, but the ssa in Avidemux cannot be configured in terms of Font. I did reduce the font size but with bigger or smaller size you cannot read at all the text, the letters are full, (e.g. there is no space inside the A, it's liek all the letter would be filled with the colour).

Is there any way/software that can embed UTF-8 characters in a movie?
We are talking about english characters with some signs (e.g. the french accents, it's neither cyrilics, nor chineese...)

VLC isn't really and truly intended for people to use it as a conversion tool. Yet that doesn't stop people from making it their first choice. We get posts from time to time about using VLC to do conversion and people seem to have a lot of problems with that.

Handbrake isn't very good for hard coding subtitles. Maybe it was at one time in the past, but current versions really suck at the job.

You can save yourself a ton of hard work by using Xvid4PSP to hardcode your subs. It can handle UTF-8. I've used it to hardcode simplified Chinese subtitles into videos. But do be warned - my experience is that Xvid4PSP is more theoretical than practical at producing MPEG-2 output for DVD. I've used it successfully to create Xvid with hardcoded subs though. I haven't tried H.264 output, but that should be OK too. Your subtitles should be no problem at all for Xvid4PSP but again, remember that you'll likely have the best results if you stick with Xvid or H.264 output.

Hybrid should be able to do the job unless I broke something

Just uncheck the "USE CC" option and it will hardcode your subs.

you miss to try to use VirtualDubMod can import subtitles in srt
in streams >in the stream list
if you want to impress the subtitles permanently and convert ssa subtitle wanting to use the filter also set the blend and curves down a fifth getting a slight fade subtitle favorite colors yellow character atenuato (35 shades, red 253, saturation 232, green 235 , brightness 157, blue 81) with red outline clearly visible and less tiring of the usual white with black outline (software converter srt to ssa)

I think using VIrtualdub is a pain in da ass... That's why I changed to PotEncoder, supports UTF-8, ANSI, you name it. Also highly customizable.

No offense if you love VirtualDub!
