what are they and why would i want to hack my player? i kind of know what region hack is but i would appreciate it if someone elaborated on that too.

Some movies are copy-protected. If you try to copy these movies to your VCR, the picture will look garbled. It will turn from light to dark and to light again, and the colors are f***ed up. Something like that..
The Macrovision hack, disables/overrides the circuit in your player, that handles this protection stuff. So your copys to VCR will look fine and crispy. The protection is gone. :P -
