Hi all, just asking of people have they had many experiences with using BD-RE discs for back up of films , just wondering what other people think of this method . is it reliable ? My experiences with DVD REs is not very good just wondered if it was the same with blu-ray ?What software to use etc.

Depends on what brand. I live and die by Verbatim. Also if you're going to create a data backup on BD-RE, you may want to use ImgBurn

I don't know of anyone who recommends re-recordable discs as long term, archival storage.
But they can be handy for short term, and testing purposes.

Burn with ImgBurn. You'll need to do a full format on the disc the first time you use it, but after that you can do quick erase. The full format will take quite a while, especially since most BD-RE discs are 2x speed.

Panasonic BD-RE discs made in Japan will be the best available, but are expensive.

I echo what Kerry56 says but I also use only Verbatim just like MindController recommends. I have one Sony BD-RE disc and I stopped using it because I started having playback problems. I was unable to determine if it was the disc or the player and it really could be either one. My Verbatim RE discs have worked reliably for me.

I purchased a Sony BD-RE and it didn't work at all. I am attempting to follow Sony's warranty directions to see if they honor this. If they don't, I am going to become an "anti-Sony" person. Even if I don't become anti-Sony, I will certainly not buy any more Sony optical media.

I then bought a Verbatum Disk and so far it works great. (The Sony one didn't work to save anything at all but I have tested saving files, erasing, then saving a movie on the Verbatum).

You can get duds with any brand. I got two Verbatim BD-REs a couple years ago. One was defective. The other one has served me well for many dozens of tests. (My experience with DVD-RWs has been similar). Considering that rewritables are phase-change media, it's a wonder they work at all.

That said, you shouldn't rely on REs for long-term storage, as already mentioned above. I don't hold it against Verbatim for one defective disc, nor should you against Sony for that matter. Although I do have a bit of a grudge against Sony for other reasons.

I realize you can get duds with any brand and if Sony sends me a new one that works fine, there will be no problem! I am hearing repeatedly on this forum that Verbatum is the best media, so if the price is similar, I'm going to stick with that, but I'm only talking about optical media, not other Sony stuff.

I have never used rewritable media to back up important stuff for the long term, so this topic is getting a little off track. Actually, I have had very good luck with using regular DVD-RWs, with at least being able to write something to them initially even though they have failed sometimes when erasing and rewriting. The SONY BD-RE was the first and only BD-RE I ever purchased and it was a little pricey. I wanted it mostly for testing, before burning stuff to the non-rewritable. So I was disappointed that it did not work, at all!

Couldn't you return it to wherever you bought it? Yeah, REs are a little pricey, or at least they were when I bought mine. I got my two from Amazon and just didn't bother with trying to do a return of the defective one.

That's strange about the Verbatim BD-RE's.....

I have only ever had one, and it did not even make it to 50 burns!!
Maybe around 20+ ?
Very few burns, only used for testing a few different things.

The thing is totally jacked!!
And I am one of the top pro Verbatim anything users!
Not sure what happened, just out of the blue it would not work anymore.
