    This is what it looks like when I play 720p files in fullscreen on the trial version.

    How can I get it to look fullscreen like this?

    But dark knight rises is 2.35:1 so it should have black borders in a 16:9 display.

    The movie is supposed to look like that. Most widescreen movies are ~2.35:1, not 1.78:1.

    ... unless they're straight to cable or some such thing.

    Whether it's 720p has nothing to do with that.
