Dear members,
Greetings!
I am new here, and found this forum because my first venture into DVD burning is apparently a little spotty. I made a back-up of some favorite episodes of 'Criminal Minds' so the sets could be put away in storage, but didn't realize I had purchased DVD +R discs that were not dual layer. No problem, according to a friend who was helping me with this process, as he showed me the program 'DVDFab,' which has a function that splits DVDs so that a disc with four episodes can be split with two on each disc. So, we downloaded DVDFab and copied the discs onto some Verbatim DVD+R discs using an ASUS BW-12B1ST. The copies seemed to work fine in the computer, but when I tried them in the living room DVD player (a Malata DVP-520), they failed ("disc error major-replace").
I read online other places that the Malata will work with DVD+R, so maybe the problem is the burning software (DVDFab), or maybe it is splitting the original disc into two. I could not find any information online that dealt with both the Malata and DVDFab, so I am hoping someone here may be able to help.
I am completely new to trying to burn DVDs, so my apologies for anything I should have known and thanks, in advance, for any help anyone is willing to provide.
Best wishes,
Sincerely,
J.W.

Are these the Life series of Verbatim discs? They look like this:
http://www.verbatim.com/prod/optical-media/dvd/dvd-r-life-series/dvd-dash-r-life-series/
The Life series is low quality junk Verbatim has to sell in stores to stay price competitive with other brands.
Your player is REALLY old. Some of those old players were incredibly fussy about DVD+/-R and brands. I had an old Apex player at the time and it's been too many years for me to fully remember, but with one of DVD-/+R it would play just about any brand in existence and with the other type of disc, it was VERY fussy about which ones it would play. Again, if you have the Life series Verbatim, you may simply need higher quality Verbatims or maybe DVD-R will work better on your player.
It is possible that you did something wrong in splitting or burning, but I think that is unlikely as DVDFab is a known commodity so let's pursue finding out if you have the Life series or not. If not, then can you find Verbatim DVD-R discs to burn to? Again, your player is VERY old so it could just be wearing out and showing more fussiness in its old age. It is just about miraculous that you can still use it. I had to retire my two Apex players to a closet to be used only in case of emergencies many years ago. -
Dear Jman,
Hello and thanks for the reply.
The DVD +R discs I am using are not the life series but rather these:
http://www.amazon.com/Verbatim-97459-to16x-Branded-Recordable/dp/B003ZDNZSS/ref=sr_1_1...rbatim+dvd%2Br
My Malata player works like a charm. I have used it every day for the last 8 years and can play anything other than Blu-Ray in it with no problem. Others online claim they can play DVD+R on it, so I don't really know what the problem is.
I plan to pick up some -R discs soon to run more tests.
I will report back once I've tried -R.
Thanks again and best wishes,
Sincerely,
J.W.
