    Is there a way to detect if a disk has cinavia before wasting the time to back it up?

    There are those lists of movies like the dvdfab blog.
    Mostly the new sony companies releases may be suspect.

    Unless the title is included in a published list of movies that are Cinavia protected, I'd say the answer is "No".

    DVDFab has an option to "Create Protected Disc to disable Cinavia". If the disc does not have Cinavia, this option will be greyed out.
    This is probably the fastest way to test for it, and has proved to be fairly reliable.
