  1. Hi

So I'm trying to rip The Animatrix from DVD, tried my usual combination of DVD Decrypter with MakeMKV (easier to re-encode from). Gave me an IO error. Next up was AnyDVD with DVD Decrypter, same problem. DVDFab 8.2.1.0 also doesn't work nor DVD Shrink with AnyDVD/DVDFab. Also tried FixVTS, vobblanker and RipIt4Me, all of them gives me some sort of error.

What is odd is that sometimes AnyDVD and DVDFab passkey will just sit there trying to remove the CR protection. I did search on the web and this forum but the only hit I got here was for Macs.

Disc is brand new, got it a week ago. Also has trouble playing in Windows Media Player, WMP Classic and PowerDVD. Also that horrible InterActual software that comes on the disc freezes immediately. Managed to watch 8/9 of the short films. Haven't tried on a stand-alone DVD player yet.

Should I return the disc or did I screw up somewhere? All my other discs ripped flawlessly.

    Thanks

(Tried DVDFab again whilst typing this, bombed out on vts_01_3.vob, saying "Reading/Writing Error Control" )

I vote for return it. It's been long enough since that came out that if it was really and truly unrippable that the disc would have passed into legendary status and everybody in Hollywood would have made their DVDs the same way. It's got to be some kind of weirdness on the disc, maybe a scratch you can't see.

I have seen some rental discs that are just about impossible to rip, but this is due to scratches and wear on the disc. If you have different drives you can try ripping from all of them and one of them might be able to read it and rip it. Usually really scratched up discs require a lot of work by the consumer to polish them to try to get them to a point where they can briefly be read enough to fully rip, but with a new disc I'm thinking it's a defect in the disc or a scratch you can't see.

go into settings for dvdfab and check disable/enable pathplayer settings and try again,
if neither of them work then the you may have a bad disc.

  4. Probably right, will ask for a new disc and see how it goes. Also forgot to mention I tried ripping this on 2 different computers.

    *Checking pathplayer now

Or try another drive/pc if you have one or a spare drive to put in your pc and try.

  7. Disabled PathPlayer, ripping failed as well. I did test it on my laptop, did the exact same thing as on my PC. Going to return it tomorrow and hope the new disc works

As hech54 points out, DVD Shrink hasn't been updated in 8 years. The author was forced to abandon it or face a potentially ruinous lawsuit from a company that had just successfully sued a company out of business that made commercial DVD backup software. Some very large Hollywood studios routinely use copy protection methods on DVDs that DVD Shrink does not understand. If you need a free program, there is some free version of DVDFab you can use that trails the commercial version by about 6 months. DVD Shrink may work well for your decryption needs if you don't run into any discs it doesn't understand, but eventually you will. It's ability to shrink dual layer rips to single layer size still works fine but you really should be ripping with a different program.

Crap. I confused DVD Shrink with DVD Decrypter. My comments are not correct. DVD Shrink was indeed abandoned, but it was because the author was hired by Nero to develop a somewhat similar product for them. My comments are correct only if you replace "DVD Shrink" with "DVD Decrypter". Sorry.

  13. Yo, thanks for the help guys. Disc was indeed a lemon. Was able to rip the disc just using MakeMKV. Just wanted to make sure since the drive to the store cost me more than the disc itself
