How to convert mts to avi?

Hi folks,

I bought a Canon Legria HFR205 video camera a couple of months ago and finally started doing some filming with it recently.

So here’s my problem - the camera comes with a transfer utility, but no software for converting the .mts file type the videos are created in. I spoke with someone at canon who say it comes supplied with the Camera – this is a lie.

I have tried converting the files in windows movie maker, but the .mts is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker.

My question is what software can I use to convert the .mts into an avi?

Maybe time to get a better editor like Movie Studio or VideoStudio Pro.


Or if you prefer to use wmm then try convert to avi with mp4camtoavi or VoltaicHD.

@Baldrick, thanks for those links. I have now found a tool called Free Studio which works perfectly.

@mgh, I can confirm there is no such tool that converts the mts on those CDs
