I am struggling to get information on burning files that are already mpeg format to cd-r to play on a dvd player which plays VCDs. I gather there is some conversion process as by just writing these to disc with a normal CD burner they do not play. Please can someone explain where I can going wrong?!

I use TMPGEnc to make mpeg VCD compliant.
Check out "How to".

Well the trouble is in the "disk format". If you just copy them to a cd-r you got yourself a data disk. A CD-R is just the media, a VCD / SVCD has to have the right data and file structure for your dvd player.
For getting the right format check out a "How to burn a VCD using.."
article under How To Author. If you have say Nero, you can do this
in a snap.
Now for your next possible problem ... all yyz.mpg files are not
actually the same format. For example, for it to be a compliant VCD mpeg it must use mpeg1 compression and be the right resolution.
So you can't just burn any old dot mpg file to a VCD. Check out what is VCD for some more info on this. You might also find a tool under Other:Tools that will tell you about your file!
Never fear ... you can just re-encode it to a reasonable standard. Check out the How To Conver stuff.
Good Luck to ya !!I mean it in the nicest way.
