  1. I have a .viv file that I can't open or convert on my mac. The only thing I've found that can play it on a mac is a video plugin for Netscape Navigator, but it won't work on OSX (it's an OS9 plugin and Apple dropped support for OS9 anything with OS 10.5). I've heard that the windows version of RealPlayer can still run .viv files. I didn't know if that's true or not, but I'd rather not just delete this vid. Since I can't crack this nut myself, all I can think of is to send it to someone and have them convert it for me and send it back.

So how about it? Anyone know how to turn .viv into something more manageable? Mov, mpg, avi, wmv, etc.? Word of warning, this is an adult video. I don't know exactly what's on it because I can't open it, but let's assume it's potentially offensive to those of delicate sensibilities.

    Hi

Those .viv files (at least, some of them) can be played with mPlayer/SMPlayer and converted with MEncoder (using w32codecs).

    Code:
mencoder foo.viv -of lavf -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=800 -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=libmp3lame:abitrate=64 -o foo.mkv

  3. Thank you for the recommendation. I downloaded those and I still can't get it open, though. Are there a lot of .vivs that MPlayer can't open, or might it just be a bad file?

I attached the file below if someone else wants to take a crack at it, but I don't really know anything about it so Windows users should probably run it through a virus scanner first.

Edit1: I just noticed your attachment, bat999. Downloading now.
Edit2: I may be doing something wrong, I couldn't get MPlayer to open the .viv version of that south park video either.

I had a quick look and I think it may be some sort or proprietary codec issue. Also, apparently some of those vivo files have only one keyframe at the beginning. That'd really make it hard to play, for almost anything.

    This link may help:

Try opening the file with mediainfo and posting the results.

That ain't encouraging ... I seriously suspect there's an exotic/obscure codec there. Try the link I posted above to see if you can get the right one.

  7. I did download those XAnim codecs but I'm not sure what to do with them. I've never been so good at stuff like this, but I'm going to read over some tutorials when I'm a little more awake. Bat999 was able to convert the video file for me and it plays fine in .mkv format, so now I just need to figure out how to do this myself so I don't have to bother someone else next time I find a weird file
