Yep I have been. They did this for awhile last year but I didn't take part in it.
You trade in a real dvd in its original case and you get a 5.00 coupon toward a bluray movie, tv show or music program. The only bummer is its only one per title so you can't bring in a bunch of dvds and get a boxset bluray pack for free. And its only off the movies 9.99 and higher so the ones you might want might be marked down to 7.99 and not eligible for the coupon.
What I've been doing is re-buying my hd-dvd collection on bluray. I've been getting rid of some dvds I've no intention of watching again or plan on getting the bluray version of.
My main missions are nearly complete. I got the first Transformers movie on bluray. Had it on hddvd but now I got the two disc version on bluray. Also FINALLY got my Matrix trilogy on bluray. I had it on dvd of course but I also got the box set on hd-dvd. Now I have it on bluray. It was actually cheaper buying it individually with the coupons then to buy the bluray box set.
I also got the Mummy trilogy on bluray. I got ghostbusters 1 and Superman The Movie (the first one from '78). I also got Twister and on a whim I bought the Jean Claude Van Damme two pack Bloodsport and Timecop. I figure those should be worth a laugh and some half decent action in it.
I only have two left to get to finish of replacing my hddvd collection. The first Harry Potter movie and Superman Returns. After that I'll be free of hd-dvd. I'm gonna keep the ones that are the hd-dvd and dvd combo ones since I can still play the dvd side on a regular player.
I'm not sure if I'll try selling my xbox hd-dvd drive or not. I'm not sure if there is really a market for it anymore. It might be more of a hassle trying to sell it and the other movies. I might just box them up and store them.
Anyway I really haven't used my hd-dvd drive in a while. The xbox 360 is a good movie player (disc wise and streaming from vudu/zune/youtube but not so much native file wise - pc streaming via transcoding ok of course but I don't do that - I hate having to have a computer on and a console on to watch stuff don't know just seems wasteful to me if I have other options). Edit - what I meant to get to was that the xbox 360 is a bit loud for watching movies - I have a gen 2 model not a slim so its pretty loud, though I gather a slim model isn't exactly whisper quite but quieter than an older 360.
So there it is in a nutshell. I've been hanging out at my Bestbuy a lot since last weekend when they brough it back out.
Sure 5.00 isn't much but you get to get rid of some dvds you don't want anymore. Also I got lots of my new blurays for just 5.00 new in wrapper since they were only 9.99 to begin with. A 5.00 bluray is ok in my book. Also selling individual dvds on ebay doesn't seem very profitable to me. A collection might get more interest and if it is rarer or a cult classic that might get more bids but if I have any of those I keep them (like UHF on dvd - I am NOT getting rid of that Weird Al masterpiece).
