  1. hello all,

I am using the latest version of RipBot to compress some AVIs into MKV, which i've done a lot of but recently the black is never completely black, even when i use the colour tweak and put the brightness right down to -20 it is still grey and won't go black, it isn't the monitor as the edge of the picture where the video isn't showing (for example on 4:3) is completely black, it's only where the actual video is placed it is grey

    can anyone help me out

    thanks a lot

  4. I'd assume the original AVIs also display incorrectly? If so, you probably don't want to be changing the levels when encoding, you want to be fixing the way the video is displayed.

Using a standalone device hooked up to a TV it's generally pretty hard to go wrong. Does the video display correctly when played using a standalone device? Anyway, there's often a way to set the level expected by the TV, or a way to set the output level being sent by the playback device, or both.

In my case the TV is set to expect PC (full range) levels at the HDMI input the PC is using, while the PC's video card is set to always expand video to PC levels. There's a few ways to fix it using a PC but while most video uses TV (limited range) levels as long as the playback device/TV inputs and outputs match you should be fine.
