I purchased Vegas 10 probably almost 2 years ago or so.
I am finally going to get around to editing all my home videos.
Probably about 25% of them are standard def mpegs from a Sony DVD camcorder.
The remaining are from a Sony HD camera from about the last 3 years.

I don't plan on doing anything super fancy. I basically want to join groups of video together editing out the pointless parts, add some transitions, and maybe some text here and there.
Perhaps author to SD DVD for the old ones and BD for the new ones with or without menus.

My main question is, is it worth it get the newer Vegas 11? I think its about $100-125.
For someone not looking to get to crazy with a million options is there any benefit of me spending the money for the newer software or just stick with what I have?

    Thanks,
    Andy

    I don't even have Vegas 10, and I'm fine.
    I still use Premiere CS3 and CS4, and they're already at CS6.

    Ain't broke, don't fix it.

Ask yourself after reading the specs ...do I need the upgrade... And answer your own question

Many are quite happy using Vegas 8 to do good quality editing....

Well, I don't even know what they all mean... for example Zplane elastique timestretching:...
    WTF is that?

Anyway, more important things that you wont see in the specs... I could care less if it comes with 400 new transitions...

    Is the newer version:
    More stable...maybe 10 crashes a lot, I don't know
    Faster at rendering the video
Will I get a better quality video with 11
Perhaps the newer version is just easier to use... more intuitive???

Or any other factors that matter along those lines...

    Thanks for the replies...

stability is taken care of with incremental updates - download the latest release from the website. 10's final version should be as stable as 11.

11 may be faster rendering if you use gpu encoding with a top of the line graphics card. they have made some improvements.

quality using the same settings will be the same with either version. they swapped the usage of sony avc and mainconcept avc encoders again in 11, so most stuff is done with mc in 11 but sony in 10.

the only change in the interfaces i recall is the "render as" pop-up in 11 is now different. i prefer the old one, but the new one is usable. other than that the gui and menus are the same since version 6 i think.

Just to be exact, Vegas Pro 12 is NOT out yet. Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 12 was announced today though and is available now.

Thanks guys... is it safe to assume that this program will also take advantage of multiple monitors?

i don't recall any version of vegas pro that didn't have the view on external monitor buttons or undocking that allows moving things to a second/third/forth monitor.

Well, I decided to say screw it especially since I was mistaken about the price. I don't know what I was looking at the first time but Vegas 11 is only $60 on Amazon. It will be here today. And since ram is so cheap I just ordered 6gig to bump me to 12. That will arrive tomorrow.
Hopefully I can finally get this project moving!
    Thanks again for the replies.

    lordhutt,
you probably got Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (or Prod.Suite) 11 for $60, not Vegas Pro 11. To correct my previous post also, Sony seems to have dropped the word "Vegas" altogether from the version 12 of Movie Studio Platinum, which might help realise that these are different programs.
    Comparison chart here
    http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiope/compare

Also note this regarding ram and the 32-bit app. Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11 (current and last build is 322)
    Notable fixes/changes in version 11.0 (Build 283)
    ---
Vegas Movie Studio can now address up to 4 GB of memory when running on a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7.

    Hey vkmast,
Yeah I guess I never actually mentioned which version I had. It's the Platinum Production Suite. Pro is a little beyond my capabilities for that kind of $$$$... I mean, I'm sure I could learn to use the pro version fine BUT, I can also use a pencil quite well but that doesn't mean I can draw if you get my meaning.
And for half the price I'll just stick with 11 over 12. The 10 that I have would have probably been more then fine.

As for the ram. Didn't know that But, been wanting to upgrade it anyway and its so cheap right now what the hell! I think I paid 3x for the 6 gig I have when I build this PC.
