Its only nominally 4.7gb. You'll need to set your encoder to output to 4.3gb.
VidCoder still has controls that allow you to set a specific size output for you mkv files. And going that small, you should reduce resolution to 720p as you've noted.
BD Rebuilder is able to compress a blu ray to fit a dvd (either size) and keep it in blu ray/AVCHD format. Since you are playing from the computer, this format shouldn't be a problem, as VLC will be able to play the main movie for you. Be sure to make a main movie backup only...no menus or extras.
And BD Rebuilder has controls that allow you to make it 720p video as well. -
I use Ripbot, but the important thing is that it uses the x264 encoder. Handbrake is another one.
Perhaps you should re-think how you're going to approach this. Re-encoding to a target size means quality will be all over the place. Clean animation will typically be okay at DVDR size, whereas anything with a lot of grain or noise will not be watchable, IMO. That's just at the extremes, you'll also see everything in between. Resizing to 720p is hardly ideal.
You could get an external hard drive (they're relatively cheap now) and use quality-based encoding. Do a few tests at quality levels of CRF 18-22 to see what's acceptable quality to you, on your display. Then all your videos will be approximately that quality level, although file sizes will vary. All will offer some space saving over the original though. BTW, lower CRF number yields higher quality.
The other option is to get a Blu-Ray burner and back up each movie to BDR, which will certainly give good quality. In that case, encoding to target size makes sense, since the available space is ample.
As to audio, I use 5.1 AC3 at 640 kb/s (max bitrate), which although lossy, will also offer considerable space saving. But I do this because my TV can output AC3 5.1 out to my receiver. (I play my MKVs direct from external powered hard drive on my TV's onboard media player.)
Good luck.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
okok yea ive been looking to do that quality based encoding so no matter if the movie is 2 or 3 hrs the quality will be the same but file size will be diferent i have an external hard drive with some movies already but is just taking to much space and i was looking to put all my movies in dvd or bluray media im just looking for a good way to do that maby i can shrink a 50gb blue ray to a 25gb media is that posible also just having the main movie and audio in 5.1 with atleast 1 subtitle track can i do that also will it be able to be played in a blueray player? with what software can i do this thats sounds like a great way to do it that way i have 25gb of space just for video audio an subtiles with out all the menus and extras thanks for the reply
-
BD Rebuilder was specifically made to shrink larger blu ray to fit onto 25gb discs. It has had more options added in, but it is still the best software for this particular task.
No need to downsize resolution when doing this. -
okok with that will i get just the movie file with no menus and all that and in a format that a blueray player can play?
-
Yes. Use the Movie only mode and you will not have a menu or extras. Output will be blu ray video format.
If you need a basic guide for setting up the program, here is one: http://club.myce.com/f32/bd-rebuilder-guide-313227/
Its getting a bit old now, and there have been a lot more controls added in, but should work as an introduction to the program. -
nice! oko il take a look at the guide thanks for all the help il start trying settings btw do u know how much does BD-R media goes for?

You can do movie-only with one audio stream and one subtitle stream using BDRB. By ditching extras, menus, and unwanted audio streams, oftentimes movie only will be small enough to fit without re-encoding. Especially if you re-encode your primary audio track to AC3. That's one reason why I say a BDR offers ample space. In those cases where a re-encode of the video is necessary, quality loss will be obviously less severe than going to DVD size, and not noticeable. Then burn the output folders to BDR with ImgBurn. If your standalone player will play burnt BDRs at all (it certainly should), it will play discs encoded with BDRB and burnt with ImgBurn.
Keep in mind though that unless you buy cheapo less-reliable BDRs, you're gonna pay a buck each or more. A 2 TB external drive can be had for about 80 bucks or so if you keep alert for sales. You can get over 150 MKVs encoded at CRF20 on one.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Use Verbatim BD-R discs, like these: http://www.amazon.com/Verbatim-97457-Blu-ray-Recordable-25-Disc/dp/B00471HK0Q/ref=sr_1...s=verbatim+bdr
Or get the FTI Falcon Smart Blu discs from here: http://www.mediamegamall.com/smartblu-bluray-disc-25gb-silver-lacquer-print-25pk-cakeb...5-p-27685.html
These guys are a bit high on shipping and handling though, if you don't order more than $50 worth of merchandise.
Edit: Since you are in Canada, you might want to try this shop instead: http://www.duplication.ca/shop/Falcon-25GB-4X-Blu-ray-Disc-Shiny-Silver-Hub-Printable-...ebox-25pk.html -
what is that CRF20 encode? how big of a size will the movie be? is maybe a good idea to get another external hard drive just for movies
but what will be the best option? to encode? cause i have a couple of movies in 720p wich are around 4 to 6 gb on my hard drive that looks ok on my tv nothing compared to the retail disc on my ps3 though but im trying to be in between that quiality to storage ratio :P
-
hmmm 31 bucks for 25 discs doesn't sound that bad hmmm intresting i thought they were more expensive :P
-
I backup to both hard drives and blu ray. Once I've gone through the trouble of compressing a movie to a smaller size, I don't want to have to do it again. I usually play from my 2tb drives in my HTPC, but having the backups on blu ray discs is insurance.
-
Also your movies will play on a stand alone bluray player as long as they don't contain cinavia protection.
-
ok so movies will be around 25 gbs on hard drive space in blu ray/AVCHD format so you can if you wanted burn another disc right? so youl fit around 80 movies in a 2 tbs drive right?
-
that damn cinivia so even if i burn them in a disc will i get the cinivia thing i usually play my movies on my ps3
-
The size of the movies will be around 23.3gb.
If the movie has Cinavia, and your player supports it (which the PS3 does), then it will stop playback from a copy on a burned disc.
This is why many people use media players, like the Western Digital TV Live for playback, or use HTPC's like I do. -
hmmmmmm intresting im looking at the WD one seems like a good choise its just 89 bucks then again my room is not that far from the livin room and i can hook up a hdmi cable allthe way to my tv LOL thats how ive been doing it so far hehehehe so maybe i can buy a internal hard drive wich will be cheaper :3
