What is the best way and associated settings to import miniDV video into PC

I connected my Pany 3CCD camera to my PC via FireWire and tried to convert the incoming stream to MPEG2, MP4 264 and even DV interleaved, but the final result does not impress me. I'm using AVS Recorder and Cyberlink Director 2015. Are there any other options? Settings?

1) Which panny 3ccd camera?
2) Are you capturing DV or HDV? (see question 1)
AVS recorder and Cyberlink are both crap, but that shouldn't affect the incoming DV or HDV stream.
Why are you converting these streams? What is your final goal? How are you planning to view and use your "finished" files?
