I'm in the process of converting my family's home video collection to digital files. There is so much footage that I'm planning on stuffing all the movie files onto a portable hard drive. I would like to include a program on the drive that provides a listing of all the movies. Right now I'm using a spreadsheet to index everything, but I'm sure there is a better way. My requirements are:
This seems like an easy enough request, but a google search for "video organization software" turns up so many results I can't tell what would be useful. I would like to avoid trying out dozens of apps so if anyone has any good experiences with one I would like to hear about it.
- Free
- Portable -- While I would like it to not require an installation, I can bend if needed
- Can provide metadata -- who's in the video, where, when, comments, etc.
- Show's file stats -- how long, what format, what resolution, framerate, etc.
- Searchable and sortable on the metadata
- Can launch the movie easily from the app

Ant Movie Catalog can catalog the movies...I think xbmc can do both. Maybe MediaPortal also
