    Hi,
Newbie here - here is my dilemma. I transferred a bunch of old VHS tapes from the 80's and 90's years ago using a good ole VCR and transferred to DVD-R using a Panasonic DVD-recorder. The results were good, but I realized after a while that the DVD-r result was less than stellar color-wise (kind of washed out, blah), etc. I discovered DaVinci Resolve, and also used iMovie and started trying to take those DVD-r vids and edit the color to make them pop. Using DaVinci on my iMac, the end result colorwise was great, but every video I made and burned to DVD-r looked a little choppy, not as clear and smooth as the original DVD. To get the video on to the iMac to edit in DaVinci, I ripped using Handbrake with a ton of different settings. The best setting seemed to be when I use Production Max...after getting that file on to the computer, I opened it up in DaVinci and edited it, then exported using Apple Pro Res settings, or h.264 - both looked pretty good, but still not as smooth and clear as the original. Still some choppyness, artifacts with fast movement, etc.

What am I doing wrong? or, better, what can I do to get the ripped video to look EXACTLY like the original so when I edit in DaVinci it just changes the colors, nothing else.
Help!! (I've burned so many DVD-r's that I probably am keeping the local Wal-Mart in business in their electronics section)

Is the dvd video interlaced? Did you account for it in your work flow?

If you are using Handbrake, you aren't "ripping", you are "ripping + converting". And the conversion is (probably badly) deinterlacing the footage.

I honestly don't know if it is interlaced - it is from a DVD-r that I transferred a VHS quality video to...how do I know? Sorry, new at this...

I have deinterlacing turned off in Handbrake if that means anything...I am only using Handbrake because it appears to be the more powerful way to rip. I know it converts too, but I think I have to convert the original video because DaVinci Resolve doesn't import .VOB files or mpg files...the only way I can "auto correct the color" is by converting than dumping into DaVinci - I think...

I guess what I would like input from anyone about is:

Is there a way to set handbrake to rip an exact, duplicate copy of the original vob file from the DVD - exact same quality, file size, etc.? (so if I burned the file that was ripped from handbrake on my hard drive to a dvd, it would look exactly the same as the original)
Or is there another program I should be using to get that exact copy on to the hard drive for burning/editing?

Thanks to anyone who can help!
