  2. VCD's of what? That is, what source are you using?
Captured video? DVD? That answer will make a difference,
because the quality of your vcd will vary with the quality
    of your source.

    Quick thoughts come to mind:

-- interlaced, or poorly de-interlaced source will result in
"tearing" in the VCD-- especially in high-motion scenes.
-- Sefy's templates, and the howto files on this site
    are quite good.

-- try a 3-5 minute clip, encode in a bunch of different
ways, and burn them to a cdrw. Then play them to see
    the quality of each.

  3. Well,

Since most of the people who have read the documentation available here are pretty okay with the quality they get, i wonder, it could also be the device you use to play the vcd's on.
Do you play them on a regular PC or on a standalone VCD/DVD player ?

  5. I'd read the Howto sectioms on this site, or on digital
    digest.

Personally, I mostly use flask and bbmpeg to make vcd's,
although recently I've been playing around with frame-
serving to tmpg to do the mpeg1 encoding.

There are two settings that seem to have a big impact:
    motion search percision and de-interlacing.

On the default threshold for de-interlacing in flask, I
got a ton of horizontal lines in my vcd's. This got fixed
when I lowered the threshold to the 3-4 range.

Motion search percision is easy to fiddle with in tmpg,
just pick high, or highest quality. In bbmpeg, there are
a bunch of advanced options you have to fiddle with to
    get good results.

Easy, use TMPG to encode and not Flask. If the settings are complex and are F'ing it up, use TMPG. You'll get better quality over Flask as well.
