I'm about to get a 30in monitor and was wondering how long it'll last, Cause I don't remember having to buy a new monitor bck in the CRT days.

I would recommend a LED backlit monitor. They will outlast several computers with no brightness changes. The older florescent backlit monitors seem to last about ten years, if you're lucky. Most of my older ones are getting dim. The LED monitors also run much cooler and are quite a bit thinner and lighter. Less heat is good with any electronic device. I have a Viewsonic 24" LED monitor and though it's not my favorite brand, it had the connections I needed. My laptop is also LED backlit and works great.

Dell seems to have a better reputation, but I haven't used either brand. Some other members may have better info.

I've had several florescent backlights fail (usually the DC to AC inverter). All out of warranty ~3-4 years.

    A Sony Vaio laptop
    A 19" Viewsonic monitor
    A 22" Samsung monitor

With monitor prices continuing fall, it is usually cheaper to buy a new monitor than to get it fixed.
