    I am able to rotate my video with Avidemux; but the new, upright video now shows the file name (e.g. DCSN2056.avi), for the first few seconds, large and white, at its bottom.

    Is there a way for me to avoid this/remove it?

    It could be a player feature, and not be real part of the video.
    I know VLC does this. You can turn the feature off in preferences.
    Have you checked in other players than your default player?
