the results are not pretty, the "quad" core fx 4100 gets it's ass handed to it by intel's true quad core SB chips and even the dual core i3 2120 beats it in some benchmarks. i'm guessing that demand for these processors must be quite low, as microcenter originally listed the "six" core FX6100 as $200 and it's already dropped to $170; conversely they had prior to the BD launch they had dropped the price of the i5 2500k from $180 to $150 but after the BD launch it went right back up to $180.

hopefully AMD new CTO will turn things around at AMD:

    but i seriously doubt it.

They probably had to lighten their inventory as sales slowed while everyone was putting off purchase until they saw what Bulldozer would bring.

Not likely. They simply don't have the R&D and advertizing budget to compete with Intel.

the problem with that excuse is that AMD has always been the much smaller company with smaller R&D budgets and advertizing dollars but that didn't stop them from making some really kick ass cpu's like the k6-2, the athlon "thunderbird", the athlon xp/mp line, the athlon 64, the athlon x2's, then all of a sudden they started producing "barcelona" phenom with that ridiculous TLB bug, now we have the BD fiasco and their roadmaps don't exactly inspire confidence, with their projections of a measly 10%-15% increase in per x86 core performance with each successive release; AMD is making a lot of noise about having processor that are 50% faster by 2014, Intel is aiming for 20% faster cpu performance for IB and 30% faster integrated gpu performance, by the time Haskel comes out Intel will be well past the 50% faster than SB point.

we really need a 3rd player to enter x86 market, perhaps Via, patents only last 10 years, the x86 and x86-64 patents have expired, as have the SSE/SSE2 patents, it would be great if out of nowhere an enterprising player came out with an "open source" cpu, just something with a brute force design like four 256bit alu's per core, 4 256bit fpu per core, massive amounts of L1 and L2 and just make it a moderately clocked, like 1ghz multicore, perhaps 10 cores and just wipe the floor with both AMD and Intel.

who knows, maybe if i ever hit the mega millions for a few hundred million clams i'll show both these fuckers how it's done.

    Via? What a joke.

No, 17 to 20 years in the USA.

intel just has too much lead in capital equipment. they are going to 3d 22nm fab while amd is just starting with 32nm wafer fab.

it's not like their pricing changes much. i recall buying quantities of 8088 chips to build 5150 clones for about $US100 around 1980, which is about $US300, adjusted for inflation. still what a good cpu goes for now.
