  1. I just bought this tower:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+Desktop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i5+...&skuId=3155928

Which I'm very happy with, only thing is it now takes at least 20 (sometimes 30) minutes to rip a 2 hour DVD where my old HP tower took 10 minutes tops.

So can anyone recommend an external (or internal, assuming this has an expansion bay for an internal, sorry I have no idea on this stuff) drive I can add to this to use just for fast reliable ripping so I can still author and burn with the drive that came with the tower? I don't mind paying more for one if it means it's fast and won't break.

I checked the Lists part of this site but the drive which is listed there for highest read speed doesn't seem to be available anymore and it didn't have any reviews and when I Googled the drive model number the only reviews for it I could find were not good. So any suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance for ther replies.

Gateway specs don't say. Ask the Geek Squad if they can add a second internal HDD to that model.

Or take off the cover and post pictures here.

I'm interested in why you can't find 20-30 minutes to just let it do its thing. You don't ever sleep? You don't bathe? You don't eat at home? You are unable to let the rips complete while you're out of the house (at work or elsewhere) because...? You don't watch TV at all? There's your suggestion right there - just let the rips work while you're dong something else. I'm sure you won't be very enthused about my suggestion.

The specs don't say which SATA this tower supports but I suppose you may be using SATA II and perhaps the older tower used SATA III. Or it could be that the SATA speeds are the same on both PCs but the newer one has a slower rotation drive than the older one.

Exactly. I have 3 LG DVD burners....my newest one is slow as molasses at ripping and nothing has helped to improve that. Rip with the old one....burn with the new one(although the old ones burn perfectly as well).
