Hey guys,
I've been looking everywhere and can't find an answer to this. I go to burn my DVD (DVD+R DL, file 8.33gb), and first ImgBurn says it may be too big to fit the target media (which is annoying, because I calculated the bitrate for DVD9 when I rendered). If I proceed, it then says that it was unable to find any cells where the layer break could be. Every walkthrough I find seems to show ImgBurn recommending a position, saying it must be between sectors X and Y, but this doesn't. I really don't know what to do in VobBlanker. I'm working with the files as a VOB set.
Should I calculate the break myself? It has chapter markers set by DVDauthorGUI, and there's an ideal one right smack in the middle of the thing. However, it seems not to pick it up. Or, is the target size issue something to be dealt with first? I won't use DVDshrink, as there's no excess audio. I'd just as soon re-render the whole thing with a better safety margin.

Other possibility: Should I write to an ISO file first?

you probably calculated wrong. if imgburn says there isn't enough space, believe it. re-encode to a smaller size.
dvd+r-dl only holds 7.96gb (or 8.55gB) bits vs. bytes. even then you are best off leaving a couple hundred bits of free space to not write all the way to the edge and allow for uneven distribution of files on the different sides. a dl movie needs to have the layer break at a chapter point to help keep playback smooth. chapter breaks aren't always exactly in the middle of the entire file system.--

Gotcha. I figured the re-encode would have to happen, I just... Bleh. You know. Hate wasting a good render. But, that's OK.
So, as far as chapter breaks, would it help to simply insert them as frequently as possible near the middle 1/3 of the file? Also, any idea if DVDauthorGUI is inserting them properly? It just seemed alarming that it didn't recommend any sectors. -
imgburn probably choked on the calculation of the layer break since there wasn't enough space on the disc for the movie at all. maybe a divide by zero problem.
it's always found something good enough for the dl's ive given it to burn.--

Also, DO NOT ever fill a DVD-9 to full capacity, as there are other rules to make a layer break. If you fill to 99% then it is unlikely, unless you have a TON of chapter points, that there will be a cell to use. A proper layer break needs space to adjust the data on each layer. I nver ever fill past 90% capacity with never a problem with a layer break.
