i'm wanting to buy the cheap brand dvd-r disc so that i can do nothing but backup programs and junk the accumulates on my 3 hard drives. what's the best crappy brand dvd-r's to buy? meaning, i want to steer away from any brands that people have said can't even be read by the dvd-r drive that the disc was recorded on, or something like that. i'm currently looking at these two brands: DVDpro from Meritline.com and Yesbuy.net general purpose dvd-r media. the yesbuy.net media is the cheapest that i've found at $1.80 per disc when a bulk of ten is purchased. just looking for opinions, please let me know. peace

I've purchased media from Meritline before, (and I know of others) and I haven't had any problems with them. However I didn't buy the type you are asking about. Make sure to choose the less expensive shipping option, they use UPS Express by default.

  3. I've tried some of the generics from Meritline.com for DVD-R authoring (not for backing-up).

All I've tried thus far have failed at playing back properly, except for one (from Meritline): "DvdPro 25Pack 4.7GB DVD-R Blank Media V2.0 (DVD Recordable) General Purpose $1.98 each", found in the right-hand column somewhere near the top. $49.50 for the 25-pack, and prices seem to be quickly coming down. It was $57.25 just a week or so ago.

This particular generic burns flawless DVD-R movies at 2x with my Pioneer DVR-A03, as opposed to 1x with some of the other generics, which won't play correctly. Burned with Prassi Primo-DVD software.

Can't say what it's like for archiving data, but should be great, if my DVD-R movies are any indication.
