  1. According to the instructions at this site I have attemptedto use ConvertXToDVD, but as the files are supposed to be converting mycomputer is shut off. During the hotsummer days we had last month this happened but the last three days have beenquite cool here. The computer does notshut off when I am doing other normal operations. I have tried this four times with the sameresults. There is no warning or messagethe computer simply turns off.

I am using Windows Vista if that helps.

  3. Sounds like your system isn't cooled enough, get's to hot and the mainboard shuts down the system to prevent overheating (hardware damages or even a buring case),...
-> clean you fans, make sure the system get's enough heat, think about better cooling methods for your system

It could be anything causing your PC to crash. Heat is certainly a possibility, but so is some sort of software glitch. Maybe the problem is related to ConvertXToDVD, so maybe try another program like FAVC to see if that too causes a crash.

  5. desktop or laptop? If laptop monitor the air temperature coming out of the laptop while the program is running. If a desktop pull the side off and monitor the heatsink temperature while the program is running. That will usually be a fairly large aluminum finned object near the top with a fan on it. Just put your finger on it while the program is running. Normal is warm not to hot to touch.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

Try reading the temps with HW Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html That may tell you if you have an overheat program.

My other suspicion is that you have a failing RAM module. If you have more than one, remove one and try it with the other, then try with the other one. Or, try a RAM testing program like Memtest 86: http://www.memtest86.com/

    Both are freeware.

I thought that there was a rule that said that your computer's hardware had to be listed in your profile prior to a newbie being able to post.

Anyway, I would say that the problem is heat. The processor will shut itself down if the internal temperature reaches 85C(?). This is HARDCODED in the processor's code and CANNOT be overridden.

There is nothing harder than video encoding to test your computer's cooling system. 95% CPU usage for hours at a time.

Not a requirement, but it helps considerably with diagnosing computer problems. Without it, we are just guessing most times.

If they don't tell us what their PC details are, then they may not get much in the way of help. But some members don't have a clue about their computer hardware details.
