  1. Hi. I have a question that I just can't figure out. I want to rip the audio from a DVD MENU. Not the videos. I just want the audio from the different menus. Is there a way to do this?

I found one thread on the entire internet and a few guys recommended a program called pgcdemux. However, not only was it the least user-friendly program I have ever used, nothing on it seemed to work.

Does anyone have any idea on how to do this? Would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

  2. There are lots of ways. PGCDemux is certainly one of them. Open the IFO that contains the menu. It's often VTS_01_0.IFO, but not always. A look at the DVD in the DVD-ROM should tell you. Check the audio box. Tick the 'Single Cell Mode' (unless you want the audio by PGC). Tick the 'Menus Domain'. Use the drop-down box to choose the PGC or Cell you want. Give it an output folder and hit 'Process'.

You can also open a menu VOB in DGIndex and then go File->Save Project File. A Menu VOB ends in zero, like VTS_01_0.VOB, and not 1, 2, 3, ... not like the movie or extras included within. That will give you the audio for the whole thing by default. You can use the [ and ] buttons to isolate parts of the VOB to get just a part of the audio.

Thanks for replying. I tried pgcdemux again. When I hit process, it gets an error and says "Reached end of VOB too early"????

    What does this mean?

I'm really surprised there aren't any other programs that do this.

VOBs are just MPEG Program Streams. You could give a try to ffmpeg:

    1) ffmpeg -i input.vob should list the contents of the damn file, then...

    2) ffmpeg -i input.vob -acodec copy output.ac3 OR ffmpeg -i input.vob -acodec copy output.mp2

  5. Did you open the right IFO? It'll be one where the menu VOB actually has some size. And did you choose a cell or PGC that has some audio, some length?

And as I said before, you can try DGIndex. It's very easy to use. Open the Menu VOB and save the project file. You'll get the audio by default.

I always use VOBRator to demux the entire DVD menu vob (I use VirtualDub MPEG2 to identify the menu vob). It's not a very stable program (it crashes a lot) and it hasn't been updated in over a decade, but it does the job well.

  7. I figured it out.

Thanks to manono. I got the information I needed. I was unaware that dvd menu audio was stored in the 0. VOB file. With this information, I searched through several programs and found one that worked.

Anyways, thanks to everyone else as well who took the time to help. I've wanted to do this for a while.

The fact that manono's suggestions crashed on you is less an indicator of those worthy apps and more an indicator of some possibly major problems on your end. They should have work and worked well! And with probably better quality, more options and less cost to you than the item you suggested.

BTW, you are misinformed. Whether your app does the ripping+converting in one swoop or you use PGCDemux and other apps to do it in 2 or 3 steps, it is still converting to your final format and that means BOTH avenues lose quality. The only way to retain the quality is to keep it in it's original format (which is one reason PGCDemux does that).

I'm also confused with this "question no one seems to know" and "i've been looking for years" business. Videohelp has been around and prominent for MORE THAN A DECADE. Plenty of people here do know the answer, and it wouldn't have been to hard to find or taken too long. I'm beginning to wonder if this is more meant as a plug for your software...

I just found this place yesterday. I am sure people knew the answer... The problem is I didn't know where to look. I didn't even know what the VOB or IFOs were until yesterday. Usually I just used Xilisoft to rip dvd audio but I never had to rip audio from a MENU before. This isn't any kind of plug. I have no relation with isoft. They seem like just another random software company that charges 30 bucks for a program. The difference though, for ME anyway, is it worked. I don't deny that my issues with PGCDemux, etc. were my fault. I'm sure it was on my end because both programs crashed on the same step. I don't know why isoft worked. You don't have to accuse me about this. Ripping the dvd menu is something I've wanted to do but my life doesn't revolve around it. I just had time last night and it crossed my mind. One of those "To Do" list things. I googled "Rip DVD Menu Audio" and I could only find ONE related thread. It recommended PGCdemux. It didn't work. This one did. Excuse me. I'll take off the link. Geez

You could rip the menu using dvd shrink reauthor mode and then demux the resulting vob.
