I was reading an article on cnet talking about how surround sound albums never really took off. This was about sacd, dts, and dvd-a albums.
It got me to thinking about how concert dvds and blurays usually have at least dd 5.1 track on it. I like the surround track on concerts but never really wanted em for a studio album.
I think to me it happens to be how you listen to music. The article did mention most people listen to music with headphones (and it mentioned computer speakers but since you can have a 5.1 or higher pc setup I think it was referring more to like laptop setup or plain cheapy stereo sets for non htpc setups).
I think for concerts you want to watch them in a theater type environment to get the full immersion of the experience. THats where surround sound can shine. usually it seems that just the crowd noise is in the rear channels but often that is enough to give the sense of place at the venue.
For studio tracks you're most likely either listening with headphones or driving in a car where road noise would drown out any settle cues you'd get out of a surround track - not to mention not all cars are equipped with a "true" 5.1 system for obvious reasons.

So do you buy concerts on dvd/bluray?
------------------------
I have a quite a few but haven't bought any recently. I do watch the palladia concert channel on comcast hd every now and then. Just saw a replay of the CHICKENFOOT concert and was surprised that I liked it. I like Satriani so thats probably why.
I have a Joe Satriani dvd, one U2 dvd, two Phil Collins dvds and the genesis when in rome concert dvd. I also have a weird al live concert dvd and the weird al videos dvd + UHF for whats it worth.
But I haven't bought any concerts lately.
How about you?

I picked up a BB King concert from the Montreal jazz festival in Blu-ray. The video quality was amazing. The audio was surround, and very good. But not as well separated as a movie surround track.
The problem with most concert videos that I've seen is that they don't seem to have really good surround sound. I can see, that in a regular movie, they have very good control of the audio and are able to mix and blends tracks any way they want. In a concert, maybe a bit harder to do the mixing and separations. But that's just a guess on my part.
EDIT: I should add that all my audio, computer and DVD/BD players go through my surround sound system. I play back my BDs though the computer, linked to the amplifier with coaxial audio. Fortunately, I live in a house and most of my neighbors are seasonal and gone at present, so I can crank up the volume without any complaints. Much better than headphones or computer speakers.Last edited by redwudz; 26th Jun 2011 at 12:37.

Damn I forgot I have another one. Bryan Adams live at Slane Castle. That one is really good too.

FYI the Genesis when in rome concert dvd has to be the sharpest looking dvd I've ever seen. It is almost high def in appearnce. It only has about a 6mbps average according to my ps3 but it looks outstanding. Its on two discs so that might explain it. They probably did that so they could crank up the bitrate a bit more.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I think that the only concert I'd buy on DVD or BluRay is that one with Hatsune Miku's Hologram.
