I am considering buying a DVD that only exists in the American format NTSC. But I live in Europe, so I need to convert it to PAL. Can ffmpegX do the job?

You may not need to convert it to PAL. Most PC players will play NTSC files to the computer monitor and most standalone "PAL" DVD players play NTSC DVD discs to PAL60 to PAL TV.

You may encounter Region block issues.

Thank you so much for your help. I´ll check the region code, and if it is OK, I think I´ll go for it And if my stand-alone DVD - player doesn´t accept it, I can just connect the computer to the TV.

And even if the dvd is locked to region 1 and your player is not region free, all you have to do is rip the dvd to your HDD and it will be region free.

The you can burn it back to a dvdr, as edDV stated most PAL dvd players will play and NTSC format video.

And ALL pc's will play PAL or NTSC video, PC's do not care if it is PAL or NTSC, but there is the region issue again as pc dvd roms (only allow 5 region changes before becoming permanent) and software also have region issues, unless you either rip it first, thereby removing the region code, or using VLC, or flashing your PC drive, or using software that bypasses the region coding to allow you to play the original dvd on your PC.

If you have problems playing the original dvd you can always search for a code to make your standalone region free or post the make and model # of your SA player here and someone might be able to help you.

I will try! I have VLC installed on the computer (Mac), and I have the software to rip a DVD to the HDD. So in any case, I will make this work.

Thanks to both of you, edDV and Noahtuck, for your quick response. This is the first time ever that I post a question in a forum like this, and I now understand that there are a lot of helpful people out there. I am impressed and grateful!
