So I have recently explained my crazy workaround to capture a purchased amazon vod in another thread. Basically I recorded the video out from my xbox360 while it was streaming the file to capture it. I had all kinds of fits getting tunebite 8 to work with it. I even tried screen recording but only half the length of the video would be recorded. So since the xbox360 can natively stream amazon purchased wmvs from a computer I recorded the xbox playing the purchased file (I have playon but I wanted 100% buffer free so that I would get a smooth interuption free capture and I did get that).
So what lengths have you been forced to go through to backup your LEGALLY PURCHASED videos and music?
Have you had to resort to a camcorder and simply point it at the screen and suffer the quality loss? Have you simply given up on a particular purchase?
Have you - gasp - had to buy it again on dvd or bluray simply so you could back it up and play it on another device like a portable player or a phone?
------------------------------------
PLEASE NO DISCUSSION ABOUT WAREZ OR PIRATING - I'm only discussing the hassles of getting past encryptions on LEGALLY PURCHASED VIDEOS YOU OWN!!! - For backup purposes of course!

you do realize that it is still piracy, don't you? just because you legally purchase a digital copy of something doesn't mean you have the right to circumvent the copy protections on said copy, in fact the DMCA explicitly makes it a federal crime to do so.
but i'll be nice and i won't mention that, hell, i won't even point out that if you really want to be a ball buster about it, any discussion of ripping audio cd's, dvd's or BD's is a discussion about piracy and any tools listed in the "tools" section for such acts in fact aid and abet in the act of piracy, as do any tools and discussions on capturing streams from sites that only stream video.
digital millennium copyright act:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law that implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures (commonly known as digital rights management or DRM) that control access to copyrighted works. It also criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself
having said that i personally couldn't care less and would do anything i had to in order to crack the encryption, including exploiting the so-called "analogue loophole", using a screen capture program to record the screen as the file is being played or firing up a hex editor and seeing if i could extract the key from the player as the file was being viewed.
of course, i can't stand copy protections and thus have never and would never buy any digital download that had copy protection on it, i just won't waste my dough. -
@deadrats - you do know I'm referring to our definition of whats acceptable.
Regarding purchasing online video - I tend to do it more as a weakness and point of purchase instant gratification rather than a thought out purchase. Getting something instantly is so gratifying but comes with such a restriction its almost regretted just after purchasing.
In those cases its much more practical buying the physical dvd or bluray since the ripping is so much more consistent.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
@ deadrats
OMFG!!!!
LMFAO!!!!!!
Well it was not an online purchase but, waaaaay back in the day when i had a cyberhome standalone i hacked it to remove region coding and macrovision and i dubbed an import dvd that was PAL to my dvd recorder so i could have a copy in NTSC.
That was back before decent methods evolved to do good conversions on the PC.
And i made like 50 just to spite the copyright laws!!!!
LOL!!!
For modern copying on something that was streaming i have resorted to Replay Video Capture to screen cap the video and it captures audio through your onboard audio or soundcard. -
