Can you convert H.264 backwards to blu-ray file structure?

multiavchd is another option. I believe avchdcoder may also work but I don't know if it only supports avchd on dvdr media or if it supports full bluray output.
edit - also are you networked to your player? Have you tried streaming the file to it? You may not need to convert it at all. If you are connected via lan you can stream it with ps3mediaserver or playon or tversity. Wired streaming is best for video and essential for hd material to ensure buffering is stable. Wireless can work but buffering may become an issue and stuttering may result.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
can you give me the lowdown on .m2ts files? Yes, i have hard wired connection to PS3 unit..works pretty good.
My issue at times is that .mkv files cannot really have any good navigation , FF/RW that can be used ...the buffer is not great enough with the .mkv format.... -
Frankly ff/rw over networks is never really good in the first place. I believe it has something to do with the buffering itself. It never seems to be as reliable as seeking on either an internal file on the ps3 itself or on a disc being played on the ps3.
It can play m2ts files but generally only h264 files like the ones you can record with the hauppauge hdpvr. I don't believe it is possible for it to play a straight m2ts rip of a bluray - file size issues aside.
You could try remuxing the h264 to mp4 and see if that makes it any easier to play on your ps3. You should be able to use winff to do it. Just be sure to output to mp4 widescreen and use the audio and video copy command line. You can search for it here on the website. I got it from fellow user bat999 but I don't have the command line saved on the computer I'm typing from at the moment - the winff remuxing won't reencode the file - it will put it in a new container.Donatello - The Shredder? great...i've only had the PS3 about a month or so, and haven't solved yet how to find the PS3 over the network, to drop files onto...
I cannot see the PS hard drive on my network. Do i have to create a share within the PS3 itself?
thanks a bunch though. -
You would do it with your streaming software.
You don't mention how you are streaming - that might be part of your issue. Check out either playon (file streaming is free - online streaming from hulu and others is a paid service) tversity (same as playon with pay features optional) and ps3mediaserver.
You install one of those programs on your computer. In those programs is the option to add folders for sharing. Then with your computer on and connected to your network you will see your server program on your ps3 - ie if its playon the playon name will show up under your video tab on the ps3 if you want to watch videos. Click on it on the ps3 and it will let you select what folders to view in a drop down list.
Edit - to copy to the ps3 I don't believe you can push files to it from your pc.
You can do it the otherway around. For example if you use playon go to the folder with the file you want. Then select the file you want and use the triangle button I think it is for more options. Then there is a choice to copy the file to the ps3 but it is done through the ps3 itself not the other way around.
FYI its easier to simply stream then to copy unless you are planning on taking your ps3 to a friends house or something than copying would be ideal. Just remember your harddrive space while copying - i don't know how good the ps3 is on warning you about a full harddrive.Donatello - The Shredder? Although H.264 is one of the blu-ray video formats, it has to be encoded with certain specs to be BD compliant: rez, b-frames, fps, blah, blah, blah. This also includes GOP sizes, which must be smaller than usual than what most other H.264 encodes use, to ensure fluid navigation.
Any H.264 video outside of blu-ray compatibility is finger-crossing compatibility after that. You are then in "feature" mode. In other words, what your player is nice enough to accept outside of the BD spec, which it's not obligated to. You have to hope that your PS3, in this case, is lenient.
Even if you properly author this H.264 video with something like tsMuxeR, or multiAVCHD, without a full re-encode there is no guarantee. It may play, it may not. Or it may play badly. Only BD compliant content is a guarantee.
If you encode your own material you can be in control of this, such as with a blu-ray profile. Anything else, such as an MKV/MP4 you acquired/purchased/etc, is a crap shoot after that on your BD player.I hate VHS. I always did.
