    AV programs like Avast, which I use, or AVG, which I used to use.

    I know they offer the option to scan inside Zip or Rar archives, at the cost of slower performance.
    But what about scanning ISO images of data (program) CDs or DVDs ? Are they as effective for those ?

    not an iso. but you can open it with winrar and then scan the files from within winrar without having to extract it.
