help with converting

Hi Guys,
I have just Ripped a DVD on to my HDD and converted it to a format for my Daughters Ipad.
I am now faced with 5 separate files with names like VTS_01_1.m4v
Do I need to put all these together some how to be able to transfer them to her iPad ??

Dont worry I done something wrong and I think I need to do a lot more reading.
I just tried to play them through Quicktime and all the audio is out of sinc, dont know what I did wrong.
Back to the drawing board.

Use a dvd to mp4 converter like handbrake. Be sure to select Open DVD.

I now have a perfect working copy of the Movie on my Daughters Ipad, I had to rip it to my computer first though and then convert it using Handbreak, is this the correct way to do it ?????
I tried to convert it by selecting the source as my DVD drive but everything went greyed out apart from the activity window button which reported " dvd nav;read error;error reading NAV packet"
is it not possible to convert straight from the DVD.
