Try it in XP and see if it works. If not you will need to dual boot Win98.

I Googled USB video Adapter GA-VD001 and it found this document ftp://ftp.asus.com/.../USB%20Video%20Adapter/USB%20Video%20Manual/VD001.doc which says the available capture sizes are 160 x 120, 176 x 144, 320 x 240, 352 x 288 pixels. You would want to use 352 x 288 pixels if possible. Google also found this link for XP drivers http://scienscope.com/support/showthread.php?t=81 I don't have the device and don't know if these XP drivers work.

If you mean you want alternate free capture software for XP, you could try Virtualdub, Stoik Video Capture, DScaler or VirtualVCR to see if any can detect your device.

[Edit] I just took a look at what is inside the XP driver folder to see what was there before I deleted it. There is an old version of AMCAP capture software in there you can try. A lot of people like AMCAP and find it easy to use. A newer version is $12 to buy.

Hi8 to 352x288 or 352x240 single field is a huge step down in Hi8 quality. Better to capture 720x480i (for DVD) or 640x480i (square pixel).

In other words, find a better capture device.

My thoughts as well. Any current inexpensive capture device that I have seen provides better resolution.

However if you don't care about that, capture to 320x240. (After further thought, 320x240 will likely be a better choice in the US.)

If you want to try a more recent version of AMcap, there are demo version of AMcap under "download old version" here https://www.videohelp.com/tools/AMcap/old-versions#download
