I heard that you can only submit video sitemaps if your videos are stored on an http server (hence, progressively downloaded), and not if they are streamed off a video server. Is this correct?
If it is, doesn't put streaming at a major disadvantage regarding video SEO? How is google supposed to know where you're videos are.
I want to place videos on my site hoping that they'll show up in searches and I can direct some traffic to my site. If video seo (of this fashion) is important to me, should I just focus on progressive download video providers?
    Thanks.

Not sure about the sitemap.xml submissions, but if you are concerned about SEO and you are using a Flash video player (.swf) to stream your videos (even JW Player is Flash), you should look into using swfobject to display that .swf video player on the Web page.
    http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/
the use of swfobject allows you to create "alt content" which is not displayed if the viewer has the Flash web browser pluggin (95+%) but all that alt content is indexed by Google and other search engine. So your site map may reveal that there is a video there, but your "alt content" can describe in detail the content of the video... title, producer, cast, synopsis, or even a complete narration of the video! I'd say that a description like that is much more valuable than just letting Google know that there is one more video posted to the Internet.
As a quick example of use of swfobject, compare what you see on the screen at this site with what you see when you view the source code:
    http://www.ksowetsuits.com/
the page displays a very simple .swf graphic, yet the source code reveals a huge amount of regular HTML text content... all of which is indexed by Google.

And just a couple tips for creating your alt content...
Since most people will not see it... you can sort of overdo the descriptions.... use as many unique words as possible. In other words, broaden your Google net, try not to use the same word twice... use lots of synonyms.. OK to overdo..
Also, if you want to track just how quickly your alt content is being indexed by Google, create a truely unique word, like "videositemapsinvideohelpforumsthatilike"
in all the universe of Google, there is no word like that... copy and paste into Google and see for yourself!
Work YOUR unique word into your alt content and check every so often... see how long it takes Google to index. Since it's a completely unique word, once indexed you'll come up on first page, top position as soon a Google gets ahold of it...then you know Google has indexed your site. As for this unique word... this Forum post will already be ahead of you.
my guess is that videositemapsinvideohelpforumsthatilike will be first page, top position within 8 hours... not bad I'd say...
    Best wishes,
